The very first Maryland Wine Festival was held in 1984 at the Shriver Homestead in Union Mills with eight (8) wineries and approximately 4,500 to 5,000 visitors in attendance. It was a one-day festival that quickly outgrew the property. Thus, The Maryland Wine Festival® was moved to the Carroll County Farm Museum, and it became a two-day affair. Through those 29 years, visitor population has grown to over 20,000 yearly with a grand total to date of well over 832,700 visitors. 1984 was also the year that the Association of Maryland Wineries was organized. From the initial year of 1984 to 1985, this festival went from eight wineries to ten wineries. 1988 saw 13 wineries in attendance. Each year thereafter one or more wineries came on board. In 2008, winery attendance jumped to 23 wineries. Then in 2009, 32 wineries attended The Maryland Wine Festival®. Now, the festival Festival consistently hosts wines from over 30 Maryland Wineries Association’s member wineries.

For this barrel tasting, we're going to show off meads in all different points of the meadmaking process. Some need oak, some need steel, and others are just about ready for the bottle.

The following meads will be making an appearance:

  • Juno - Pinot Gris Mead
  • Melusine - Dry Heirloom Cider Mead
  • Lumberjack - Sweet Heirloom Cider Mead (multiple vintages)
  • Duchess - Local Ginger Root Mead
  • Hunter - Lightly Spiced Mead

Our resident biochemist will guide guests through a full spectrum of flavors and leave your taste buds excited for our future fermented goodies. Join us!

Mazer series release dinner with Perfect Little Bites

We've been working hard for the last few years on a very special mead series. Now that it's ready, all of us at Orchid Cellar are excited to share it with you.

The "Mazer" series is a line of mead and wine hybrids that combine the best of both. With the help of some choice estate-grown petit verdot, petit manseng, and chardonnay grapes, we've made something quite tasty.

  • Mazer Rosa is a fresh and light rose mead with some fantastic floral and red grape note.
  • Mazer White is an elegant and slightly creamy mead with strong floral notes and fantastic acidity.
  • Mazer Red is an opulent earthy mead big notes of cassis and powerful tannins. Imagine your favorite dry red blend combined into the body of a mead

To celebrate, we'd like to invite you to join us for an intimate five-course pairing dinner with Chris Spear of Perfect Little Bites. We'll start with a cocktail hour, descend into three scrumptious main courses and finish with a one-of-a-kind dessert.

Check out the menu below.

  • Appetizer: Toasted bread with deviled country ham salad, quince paste & arugula

  • Smoked Gouda cheese spread

  • Thai soba noodle salad with peanut sauce

  • Grilled boneless chicken thigh with harissa over couscous

  • Dessert: Coconut cardamom bulgur pudding with charred pineapple (tossed with archer)

We hope you'll join us! Don't wait long as seats are very limited!

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

21+ only, please. Alcohol will be served.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

We have plenty of parking for everyone. We're happy to hang around and chat after the dinner to allow everyone to drive home safely.

For those that don't wish to drive, we recommend downloading the uber app to your smartphone and requesting a ride to and from the meadery. In our experience, Uber is a great option in this area as long as you're not in a hurry to get home.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Feel free to email Dan at dan@orchidcellar.com

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Nope. You only need to know the name of the person that purchased the tickets.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Not a problem at all.
